What Is HubSpot?

What is HubSpot, and is it right for your business? A clear, no-nonsense explainer from a UK HubSpot Platinum Partner, covering what it does, who it's for, and what it costs.

Overview of HubSpot's Marketing, Sales, and Service Hubs displayed together on one connected platform

What Is HubSpot?

HubSpot is a customer relationship management (CRM) platform that brings a business's sales, marketing, and customer service tools into one place. Instead of juggling a separate email tool, a spreadsheet for tracking deals, and a helpdesk system that doesn't talk to either, HubSpot puts all of it on one shared platform, so every team can see the same customer data.

It was built by Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah, launched in 2006, and has grown into one of the most widely used CRM platforms for small and mid-sized businesses worldwide. But the "what is it" question usually isn't really the one people need answered. The real question is: does it fit how your business actually works. Here's what it does, in plain terms.

What Does HubSpot Actually Do?

HubSpot is built around a handful of connected tools, called "Hubs":

  • Marketing Hub — email campaigns, landing pages, forms, and marketing automation
  • Sales Hub — pipeline management, deal tracking, and sales automation
  • Service Hub — customer support tickets, help desk tools, and customer feedback
  • CMS Hub — website and blog content management
  • Operations Hub — data syncing and automation across the other Hubs

The reason businesses choose HubSpot over stitching together separate tools is that all of this shares one underlying database. A sales rep can see what marketing emails a contact opened. A support agent can see what deal is open with that customer. Nobody has to ask "which spreadsheet is that in."

Who Is HubSpot For?

HubSpot works across a wide range of business sizes, but it tends to suit growing businesses particularly well; teams that have outgrown a spreadsheet-based sales process or a bare-bones free CRM, but don't need (or want to pay for) the heavier complexity of a platform like Salesforce.

It's used across a wide range of industries, from SaaS and e-commerce to professional services and manufacturing. The common thread isn't the industry, it's the shape of the problem: multiple teams need to work from the same customer information, and doing that manually has started costing more time than it saves.

Is HubSpot Free?

HubSpot offers a free CRM tier covering core contact, deal, and pipeline management. It's a genuinely usable starting point for a small team. As a business grows and needs more, marketing automation, advanced reporting, service ticketing, workflows, it moves into paid tiers (Starter, Professional, and Enterprise) across each Hub.

Most of the value of HubSpot shows up once you're using the paid automation and reporting features properly, which is also where a lot of businesses either get stuck or leave value on the table.

How Is HubSpot Different From Other CRMs?

HubSpot's biggest differentiator is that sales, marketing, and service sit on one platform rather than three. Platforms like Salesforce offer more configurability, at the cost of more complexity and typically a higher total cost once implementation is factored in. Lighter tools like Pipedrive focus narrowly on the sales pipeline, without the marketing and service side built in.

We've written a fuller breakdown of how HubSpot compares to Salesforce, Zoho, and Pipedrive if you want the detailed version, but the short version is: HubSpot tends to be the strongest all-round fit for a growing business that wants sales, marketing, and service working from the same data, without enterprise-level complexity.

Do You Need a HubSpot Partner to Get Started?

No, plenty of businesses set HubSpot up themselves, and for a small team with straightforward requirements, that's often the right call. HubSpot Academy and its documentation cover the basics well.

Where a HubSpot partner tends to earn their cost back is when the setup isn't straightforward: multiple integrations, a messy or large existing contact database, complex pipeline logic, or a hard deadline for going live. A rushed self-implementation that needs unpicking three months later usually costs more than getting it right from the start would have.
